Book Promotion

How does an author - an unknown at that - promotes her book in a sea of millions?

Social media, which I'm slowly accepting, albeit reluctantly, can be an effective tool.  Book reviews, I have been told, can also be quite helpful.  But what I have found most enjoyable is the personal contact with readers.  Perhaps, it's a reflection of my generation, but I believe the personal contact is better both for the author and readers.

Readers enjoy meeting the author and have their copy personally autographed.  It provides a time for a few questions/comments taking the reader to another time and place, to hear something new, to be entertained, to take something away, and a number of other reasons.

For the author, it's a complement and humbling that the reader is interested in my story.  I'm curious too, in their comments and questions, their point of view.

This active engagement is what is enjoyable.

New White Sandals

New White Sandals, A Memoir,  is my first book.  I wrote the book due to the urging of friends when they heard the dramatic events of my young life.  But, I wasn't a writer.  How do I begin, let alone, tell my story in a way that would engage the reader.

So I took the same class, over and over again - Writing from Memory - at College of Marin, in Kentfield, CA taught by Jackie Kudler, a published poet, and an extraordinary teacher.  She would often say, "show your reader" by providing relevant detail to your story.

Reaching into my memory of many years ago, the reader will hear the voice and feel the emotions of a young story-teller.

Marin Greek Festival

The Marin Greek Festival, sponsored by the Greek Orthodox Church in Novato went extremely well.  Not only was there a lot of interest in the book, but people were also interested to learn something about Greece, now and then.  An annual event -  the festival was held in a magical outside setting, reminiscent of a Greek island - offered delicious Greek food, live Greek music and dance.

Friends would often ask, "what were the circumstances that caused you to leave your family and country at the age of eleven and emigrate to America?"  The recollection of the dramatic events of my young life offers  a historical perspective of Greece at the time of WWII, the civil war that followed, personal tragedy, and post-war immigration for readers to ponder and enjoy.
